Single Crochet

The single crochet (abbreviated sc) is the most fundamental of all stitches in crocheting. The single crochet stitch creates a tight stitch where there are less holes in your project. Once you know how to single crochet, you can use this stitch over and over again, by it self or in combination with other stitches. I think this is the best stitch for beginners to start with.

A single crochet stitch is done by creating a chain and completing a series of yarn overs.

1. Crochet 17 chain stitches.

2. Insert the hook from front to back into the second chain from the hook.

3. With your yarn hand, wrap the yarn from back to front over the hook.

4. Rotate the throat of the hook toward you with your hook hand, and pull the hook with the wrapped yarn through the stitch.

 

5. With your yarn hand, wrap the yarn from back to front over the hook.

 6. Rotate the throat of the hook toward you with your hook hand, and draw the hook with the wrapped yarn through both loops on the hook.

7. To work the next single crochet stitch and continue the row, insert your hook into the next chain stitch. Work 1 single crochet stitch (sc) in each chain stitch (ch) across the chain.

Lesson 2

 Slip Stitch

The slip stitch (abbreviated sl st) is the flattest or smallest of all the crochet stitches. You can use the slip stitch to crochet the edge of a project or your it can be used to make ridges on a project, the slip stitch is really more of a utility stitch or a technique.

1. Make a chain that's 6 chain stitches (ch 6) long.

2. Insert the hook into the first chain you made, forming a ring.

3. With your yarn hand, wrap the yarn from back to front over the hook (yo) and with your hook hand, rotate the throat of the hook toward you.

4. While applying gentle pressure upward, draw the hook with the wrapped yarn back through the stitch and then through the loop on the hook in one motion.

Crochet Lessons

Lesson 1 The Basics

The Basics of crochet are often overlooked when just starting and for a beginners this can be really confusing and frustrating. So in this very first lesson I am going to try my best to answer all those questions. 

Crochet Hooks

The hook I use the most is a size H/8 (5mm) crochet hook. When I first started out I would buy all aluminum hook because they were the cheaper, but after a while I realize that a hook with handle on it takes most of the stress off your hands make it easier to crochet. Yes they cost more but it is worth it.

Now there are 2 types of hooks that I have come across the one on the right is the one I like the one on the left my yarn kept getting snagged which really made it hard to crochet.

The way I pick my hook when I start a project is I go by the thickness of the yarn.  If the yarn is little and thin I use a small hook, if the yarn is big and really thick then I use a big hook.  Holding a hook is up to you everybody is different and holding a crochet hook should feel comfortable.  I feel as if the H hook comes right in the middle not being to big or to little comfortable to hold in your hand, making the movements of crocheting easier. Which yarn you use is up to you too, you will need to find the yarn you like most of the yarn I use is acrylic or some mixture of acrylic and I also use cotton. Also I would choose light colors as they are easy to see, when using dark colors they tend to be harder to see.

Slip Knot 


The slip knot is a way of tying the end of the yarn to create a loop that can be adjusted to fit the size of the crochet hook. 

1. Create a loop by taking the long end of the yarn  and winding it over the top of the shorter end. Hold the point where the yarns cross tightly between your left thumb and forefinger.

2. Using your right or left hand, pick up the standing line of yarn to form another loop. 

3. Feed this second bite through the back of the loop. This will create a loop in a loop.

4. Pull on the tail of the knot to tighten the first loop around the second.

5. Feed your crochet hook into the remaining loop and pull the long end of the yarn to close the loop over the hook.

FOUNDATION CHAIN

The foundation chain is the base for making all the crochet stitches it's a series of loops called chain stitches that are linked together.

Note: When changing colors do not cut dropped color. Carry it on inside and pick back up when you need that color again. Also if you find you have to many or to little st’s you can always add or subtract st’s, but this will only work if it’s 1 or 2 st’s you need to fix.

Sc Puff Stitch:

Insert the hook in the stitch, yarn over, draw the yarn through the stitch, yarn over, and draw the yarn through the 1 loop on the hook, repeat 4 more times in the same stitch. You should have 5 loops on your hook, yarn over and draw the yarn through all 5 loops on the hook, Sl st to close sc puff stitch.

Bottom:

   With black ch 26

Rounds 1 – Sc in next 24 st’s, 4 sc in last ch. Continuing down other side of ch, hdc in next 25 ch’s, 2 sc in first. Sl st in 2nd ch. 

 Rounds 2 – Ch 1, 2 sc in next 2 st’s, sc in next 21st’s, 2 sc in next 2 st’s, sc in next st, 2 sc in next 2 st’s, sc in next 24 st’s, 2 sc in next 2 st’s. Sl st in ch 2. 

 Rounds 3 – Ch 1, sc in next 2 st’s, 2 sc in next 2 st’s, sc in next 22 st’s, 2 sc in next 2 st’s, sc in next 4 st’s, 2 sc in next 2 st’s, sc in next 26 st’s, 2 sc in next 2 st’s, 1 sc in next st. Sl st in ch 2.

Rounds 6 – Ch 1, sc in next 7 st’s, 2 sc in next 2 st’s, sc in next 28 st’s, 2 sc in next 2 st’s, sc in next 10 st’s, 2 sc in next 2 st’s, sc in next 34 st’s, 2 sc in next 2 st’s, sc in next 2 st’s. Sl st in ch 2.

Rounds 7 – Sl st in ea st, sl st in beginning ch 1.

Rounds 8 – Working in back loops only, Ch 1, sc in ea st, sl st in ch 1.Round 9- 10: Ch 1, sc in each st, join.

Bag- You may want to use a st marker.

Round 11: Sc in next 4 st’s, *puff st in next st in purple, sc in next 9 st’s*, repeat to last 7 st’s, sc in last 7 st’s.

Round 12: Sc in next 3 st’s, *puff st in next 3 st’s in purple, sc in next 7 st’s*, repeat to end.

  

Round 14:  Sc in next st,*puff st in next 7 st’s in purple, sc in next 3 st’s*, repeat to end.

 

Round 15: Repeat round 14

Round 16: Sc in next 4 st’s, *puff st in next 2 st’s in purple, sc in next st, puff st in next 2 st’s in purple, sc in next 5 st’s*, repeat to last 3 st’s, sc in last 3 st’s.

Round 17:  Sc in next 4 st’s, *puff st in next st in purple, sc in next 3 st’s, puff st in next st in purple, sc in next 5 st’s*, repeat to last 3 st’s, sc in last 3 st’s.

Round 18-19: Sc in each st.

Part 3:

Round 36-56: Sc in each st, switching in between each color.

Purse Top: Ch 1, sc in next 40 st’s, switching in between colors, then you will turn and do a dec, sc to las 2 st’s and dec, you will repeat this until you can dec no more, finish off, now sc around the top.

Adding magnetic button: Push the prongs of the button in to the top of purse and put on back, then close back. You will need to crochet a small square to cover up the back of button. Ch 7, turn sc in each sc until you have 4 rows, sew on purse to hid back of button. Make 2.

Straps: Ch 9, turn sc until straps are as long as you want. Sew on to bag.
